The 91st Academy Awards took place last night, and there were some shockers! Green Book, though nominated widely through award season, has had a pretty muted run so far – especially due to the controversial reception of the film by Don Shirley’s family.
Alongside it nabbing Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, Mahershala Ali received his (well deserved!) second Best Supporting Actor win in the last 3 years – when is someone going to give that man a leading role?!
Surprisingly only 2 wins for Roma and 1 for The Favourite – undoubtedly this season’s favourites to win the big one. On the other hand, popular films like Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther swept up 4 and 3 respectively.
Some recognition was shown finally to Spike Lee for BlackKklansman, while veteran costume designer Ruth E. Carter went home with a statue too for Black Panther. Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk was widely snubbed by the Academy, but Regina King won Best Supporting Actress over both The Favourite nominees, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone – a shock, but a welcome one.
