Some people would question the need for yet another adaptation of Jane’s Austen’s beloved Emma, or indeed an adaptation of any of Jane Austen’s works. Not me. I’m thrilled to see the trailer for this newest retelling of the classic novel. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no such thing as too much Austen, especially when it looks as fun and silly as this new project.

Emma has always been an amusing story of love and miscommunication, and this new adaptation promises to bring even more laughs than ever, with the genius casting of Bill Nighy as Mr. Woodhouse, Josh O’Connor as Mr. Elton and Miranda Hart as Miss Bates. Meanwhile, the tantalising chemistry between Anya Taylor- Joy and Johnny Flynn suggests fans will get to enjoy plenty of Knightley/ Woodhouse drama, and what could be better than that? Add in entertaining side characters and beautiful cinematography and we have the perfect film to start the new decade.

The editing is what truly makes this trailer stand out, with fast-paced music, killer wit, and perfect timing. It’s full of drama and tension despite being relatively uneventful and leaves audiences curious as to how director Autumn de Wilde will tell such a twisting tale in a film, rather than through a mini-series.

Audiences are left with a sense of excitement and curiosity, which will likely only grow in the lead up to the film’s release. Both new and old Austen fans are sure to enjoy this revamp of the comedy classic, which packs all the delicious drama into a shorter and more manageable bite.

Emma is released on February 14th 2020.
