Harriet, written by Gregory Allen Howard and directed by Kasi Lemmons, stars Cynthia Erivo as renowned historical figure Harriet Tubman, the escaped slave-turned-abolitionist who led hundreds of slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad.
Despite Tubman’s story being told in schools across the United States as that of an American hero, it took over two decades for Hollywood to green-light this biopic. After a long-fought battle, Harriet will finally bless cinemas on November 22nd.
Ahead of its release, Outtake had the pleasure of sitting down with director Kasi Lemmons to discuss genre-bending, Tubman’s superhero status, the power of music and religious conviction, and the long road to getting this film out. You can watch our interview below:
